STAYTON – Ellen J. Drtina, 81, died Aug. 26 in Stayton. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Hermiston First United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Private interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Stanfield.
She was born March 14, 1933, in Prairie City, and grew up in John Day. She lived most of her life in Eastern Oregon.
Her first teaching position was in Myrtle Point, where she worked for three years. She lived in Stanfield from 1958-1999, and in Hermiston from 1999 to 2012.
On July 1, 1961, in John Day, she married Clarence Drtina.
She taught home economics in the Stanfield and Echo school districts for 30 years. She was a member of Chapter DR of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and Pollyannas. She was a 4-H member and leader, and belonged to two quilting groups in Hermiston.
A 1955 Oregon State University graduate, she followed Beaver sports, and faithfully listened to games on her radio.
She enjoyed horseback riding as a youth, being outdoors, camping, gardening and handcrafts.
Survivors include her daughters, Claire (Scott) Nettleton of Salem and Jane (Ernie) Claassen of Stayton; grandchildren, Eric, Riley, Sean, and Caroline Nettleton, and Brian, Byron, Logan and Rose Claassen; three nieces and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence in 2001; her sister, Kathleen Rosier; and grandson, Benjamin Claassen.
For the last two years, she was under the care of Mountain Creek Care Home.
Arrangements are under the care of North Santiam Funeral Service, 224 N 3rd Avenue, Stayton, OR 97383.
