Jessie June (Jeanne) Cates, 84, of Baker City died August 20, 2014 while residing at the Beehive Care facility. A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Mt. Hope Cemetery with Ernest Collard, a close friend, speaking to the family. Jeanne was born on October 6, 1929 in Baker City to Jess Heard and Iva Srack Heard. Even though Jess was Jeanne's biological father, Jeanne was raised by her adopted father Sam Hornbeck who took very good care of her. On October 2, 1966, Jeanne married W.A. Cates (Dub) while they were in Reno, Nev. During this marriage, they had one son, Gordon Cates. Jeanne worked as a waitress, housewife and made scrubbers for which she was well known. She was well known locally as the scrubber lady. She was the founder and sole maker of the wagon wheel pot scrubbers and they were sold from Florida to Alaska, to New York as well as shipments to India and China. Jeanne also enjoyed gardening and canning. Her outings were hunting, fishing and bingo. She looked forward to the yearly Pondosa Picnic. Survivors are her husband, Dub Cates of Baker City, her son Gordon Cates of Bell, Florida; her sister, Leanne Johnston of Ontario, Ore., and a brother Bob Heard of Pleasant Valley, Ore. She also has one grandchild and two great-grandchildren. Jeanne is preceded in death by her father, Sam Hornbeck, her mother Iva Hornbeck and a brother, Gary Hornbeck.
