SUBLETT, JR, John W. "Jay"

John W. Sublett Jr., 69, of Baker City died on the evening of July 25, 2014 after a long illness. He passed away at the home he shared with his life long companion, Eugene Proffitt, their little canine friends, Freckles, Tommy and Barney and a yellow and black canary named Chipper. "Jay" was born in 1945 in Sedalia, Mo., to John Sr. and Maleta Sublet. Later he was joined by a brother and three sisters. Jay graduated high school in Cole Camp, Mo., where he excelled and graduated early (1961). Later, he applied to and was accepted by the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Science in 1965. On July 27, 1966, Jay joined the Navy. His abilities were quickly recognized and he was assigned to the Administrative Department where he served his country honorably. In 1980 Jay moved to Baker City and went to work for the Record-Courier newspaper in advertising where he was employed for many enjoyable years, collecting ads from the local businesses. In later life, Jay remembered his work at the newspaper as the happiest time of his life...long hours but lots of friends. Jay liked to cook. He was good at it and his kitchen was overwhelmed with all the new-fangled gadgets, but immaculate thanks to the dishwasher, a well worn brilo pad and lots of cupboard space. Dinner was served on a big round table with a bright cloth and as fancy a table wear as his budget could afford. Jay was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church for many years. He was very involved and in his later years, especially enjoyed writing the weekly bulletin. He loved God and his church and in times of tribulation, he relied upon God's grace to see him through. Jay was put to rest in Mt. Hope Cemetery as witnessed by his friends. He is survived by his companion, Gene Proffitt. During Jay's last days, he expressed the wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Seventh Day Adventist Church or Heart "N' Home Hospice.
