BAKER CITY – Jack Isaiah Simmons, 92, of Baker City, died June 15, at St. Alphonsus Care Center in Baker City. Viewings were held June 19 at Gray’s West & Company, and June 21 at Driskill Memorial Chapel. A graveside service was held June 22 at Fox Cemetery.
Mr. Simmons was born Aug. 30, 1919, in Pendleton, to Harvey and Eva (Cargill) Simmons. He graduated from Pendleton High School in 1939, and joined the Army Air Corps.
From 1964-1983, he worked as a road grader operator for Ellingson Timber, where he was known as “Silent Jack.” He retired after 22 years.
In 1942, he married Norma Colleen Green in South Carolina, with whom he had four children.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gold mining, gardening and woodworking.
Survivors include his sister, Mildred Burton of Pilot Rock, sons, Delo (Estrella) Simmons and Jeron (Charline) Simmons, all of Baker City; daughters, Evelyn (Tony) Johns of Prairie City and Janyce (Terry) Foersterling of Baker City; five grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma.
