BURNS – Viola F. Cowing, 89, of Burns died Oct. 5 at Heritage House in Burns. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m Friday, Oct. 19, at Pioneer Presbyterian Church in Burns. Interment will follow at the Burns Cemetery.
Mrs. Cowing was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Crane, to Clyde and Merle McClure. She attended school in Crane and Harper.

On May 3, 1944, she married Henry E. Cowing in Burns, with whom she had two children, Julia and Clyde. They lived and worked on ranches all their lives.
She enjoyed cooking, camping, music, dancing, playing cards, crocheting, knitting, and most of all, being with her family. She was a member of the Harney County Sheriff’s Posse, and a member of the Poison Creek Grange for over 50 years. She was on two bowling leagues and drove school buses for 13 years. In 2007, she was the Harney County Pioneer Queen Mother.
Survivors include her daughter, Julia L. (W.W.) Thompson; son, Clyde H. (Teresa) Cowing; grandchildren, Michael C. Cowing, Rita M. and Jerry Matteson; Jackie and Sherry Westlake, Michael and Kayla Westlake, and Brandie and Joe Wright; and great-grandchildren, Kitrina Nelson, Kayla D. Cowing, and Karyn L. Cowing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Cowing.
Memorial donations may be made to the Pioneer Presbyterian Church children’s fund, or Harney Helping Organization for Personal Emergencies, both in Burns.
