DAUGHERTY,
Glen Albert
Glen Albert Daugherty passed away in Baker City on June 28, 2014. He was 89.
Funeral services for Mr. Daugherty were held Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 1 p.m. at the Baker City Church of the Nazarene. Sally Wiens of the Haines Methodist Church officiated. Vault interment followed the service at the Haines Cemetery.
Glen was born in Baker City, Ore., at the family home near Atwood Road to William Albert Daugherty and Florence Jeffords Daugherty. He was a life long resident of Baker County and a life member of the Baker Elks Lodge 338. In 1932 at age 8, the family moved to a small farm east of Haines on Third Street. For the next 71 years, this would be part of the Daugherty family history until Florence passed away in 2003 at age 104. For the first time in 1937, the family enjoyed electricity in that Haines home.
Glen graduated from Haines High School in 1942 with seven classmates. That fall he enrolled in what is today Eastern Oregon University for his freshman year. After that freshman year in college, the US Army came calling. On May 8, 1945, PFC Glen Daugherty woke up in Czechoslovakia after spending what seemed like an eternity of 127 days on the front line as a machine gunner from the Saar to Czechoslovakia. World War II (the war to end all wars) was finally over. He returned to civilian life, where he embarked on a distinguished career in the automobile business.
His career started in 1946 at McManus Motors, the local Kaiser-Frazer / International Dealership. For the next eight years, Glen would work at Parts, Service, Sales, and whatever else needed to be done. On May 10, 1954, Glen went to work at Baker Garage, Inc. as a salesperson selling on a “straight commission." Rising through the ranks he became co-owner and joint Dealer Principal in 1972 with his longtime friend and co-worker Eldon Baker. In 1983, son Randy returned to his home town of Baker City to buy Eldon’s ownership in the Baker Garage and for the next 31 years worked side-by-side with his father in the dealership. Glen was recognized throughout his 60 year career at Baker Garage for his outstanding sales performance and customer service. He was a member of the prestigious Buick Professional Sales Master Club and recognized for his outstanding sales accomplishments and product knowledge in GM’s Mark of Excellence program. In July of 2005, Glen was featured in GM’s national publication EDGE magazine as “Baker’s Elder Statesman” and most recently in 2006 he was recognized by GM for his career commitment to Buick Motor Division. Glen had a unique talent of putting the customer in the driver’s seat.
Glen loved many things in life including Eagle Valley where he lived for 13 years and still maintains a small retreat. North Pine out of Halfway for fire wood, Christmas trees and weekend drives. If there were Grouse, Chukar, or Pheasant to hunt, he would be there. He had a passion for trolling for trout on Unity, Thief Valley, and Malheur Reservoirs. On June 14, 2014, Glen made his final and quite successful trip to Unity Reservoir with his son Randy.
Glen based his life on honesty, trust, and a strong work ethic. That philosophy was instilled in his children’s, step children’s, and grandchildren’s lives as well. Throughout his life he always said. “idle time for youth is a bad thing for youth."
He was preceded in death by his parents William and Florence Daugherty, his brother Kenneth Daugherty, his sister Barbara Murdoch, and his all-time favorite hunting dog and companion, Kate.
His wonderful stories and love of family will be missed by his wife of 40 years, Roberta (Bobbie) Daugherty; son Randy Daugherty of Baker City, and his wife Mary Ellen; daughter Susan Rich of Springfield; step-son Dan Srack of Baker City, and his wife Kim; step-son Doug Srack of Baker City and his wife Denise; six grandchildren Gretchen and Kathryn Daugherty, Allison Rich, Andrew, McKenzie, Kyle Srack, and beloved little dog Ellie Mae.
Glen had a strong belief in college education even though he never received a college degree. Over many years, Glen and Bobbie created college savings accounts for their grandchildren. Gretchen graduated in 2012, McKenzie will graduate in March of 2015, and Kathryn will begin her junior year this fall with Andrew, Kyle, and Allison up next.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that you re-invest in your own families by contributing to your own children’s and / or grandchildren’s secondary education whether it is for current assistance or to pay-off student loans in Glen’s memory.
To honor Glen’s legacy and celebrate his life, Baker Garage, Inc. will be closed July 8, 2014 in his memory.
Services are under the direction of Coles Tribute Center, 1950 Place Street, Baker City, OR 97814.
