GREEAR, Ellwood A.


CALDWELL, Idaho – Ellwood A. Greear, 96, of John Day, died July 31 at his daughter’s home in Caldwell, where he had been living for several months. Mr. Greear was born May 25, 1916, in Austin, to William and Lilly Peal (Drewitt) Greear. He graduated from Grant County High School. On Nov. 20, 1937, he married Leola J. Farmer. He worked in the lumber industry, retiring from the Hines Lumber Company in 1981. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, climbing mountains, riding snowmobiles and motorcycles. He enjoyed building his cabin, reading, taking his children on vacations and to the cabin, and working at Driskill Memorial Chapel when he was young. He often helped his neighbors, friends and the needy. He belonged to the snowmobile club and the hill topper square dancing group. As a sawmill boss, he cut more lumber than anyone, and out-cut all mills with board feet. He was on the school board at Bates and Prairie City. Survivors include his daughters, Rosalie Gisler of Caldwell and Billie Cary of Prairie City; son, Mike Greear of Prairie City; daughter-in-law Jean Greear of Boise, Idaho; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leola Josephine Greear; and his son, Richard Sidney Greear. Arrangements are under the care of Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S.
