Charles David “Dave” Kline, 85, died March 5 at Blue Mountain Nursing Home in Prairie City. Services were March 11 at Driskill Memorial Chapel in John Day, with interment at Prairie City Cemetery.
Mr. Kline was born Nov. 4, 1927, in Marshfield, to Charles Weldon and Elizabeth Fraser Kline. He grew up in Coquille, graduating from Coquille High School in 1946, where he was student body president. A four-year letterman, he played football, basketball and competed in track, and was one of the school’s best football players.
After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Seabees. Most of his overseas duty was spent on Okinawa and Guam, cleaning and repairing damage from World War II.
He majored in animal husbandry at Oregon State University, where he graduated in 1952. While there, he met and married Jean Cloud. After graduation, his love of animals brought him to Silvies Valley to manage Bridge Creek Ranch, now Silvies Valley Ranch. He also managed The Flying Hat Ranch in Mt. Vernon.
In 1960, the family moved to Ontario, where he became a real estate broker. In 1967, ranching brought them back to Grant County, to a ranch in Prairie City. He continued to work in ranching and real estate until his retirement.
He was a 4-H leader, served on the Prairie City City Council, and on the Grant County Planning Commission.
He was a member of the Lions Club, Ducks Unlimited and the Prairie City Commercial Club.
He loved to hunt elk with his pack mule, Molly, and his saddle horses. Vinegar Mountain was a favorite packing location. He loved his black Labrador retrievers, and hunting ducks and geese.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jean; son, Dan, of Klamath Falls; daughters, Nancy (Geoff) Moffitt of Mt. Vernon and Susan (Shawn) Byrne of Scottsdale, Ariz.; granddaughters, Jeannie Kline and Candace Kline; grandsons Farrell Clark and Russell Clark; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bob; grandson, David Byrne; and nephew, Johnny Cloud.
