WICHITA, Kan. – John David “J.D.” Laurance II, 82, of Winfield, Kan., died Feb. 20 at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, Kan. Funeral services and Military Committal Honors were held Feb. 25 at Central Baptist Church in Winfield, with private family inurnment to be held at a later date.
Mr. Laurance was born Sept. 8, 1930, in Prairie City, to Clyde Alton and Emily Fern (Savage) Laurance. He was raised and attended school in Prairie City.
He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, serving during the Korean War as a Navy Seabee. After nearly four years, he was honorably discharged.
In 1952, he married Janet Gibbs in Winnemucca, with whom he had three children. The couple later divorced.
On June 26, 1970, he married Verda (Evinger) Honeycutt in Arkansas City, Kan. They made their first home in Arkansas City and later moved to Oregon. They moved back to the Winfield, Kan., area and spent time traveling.
He worked as a TV electrician, and for Webster Engineering, Gordon & Piatt and Wycoff. He retired from maintenance at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. He was a member of Central Baptist Church, and an avid reader.
Survivors include his wife, Verda Laurance of Winfield; son, John David Laurance III of Alaska; daughters Cynthia (Max) Foltz of Arkansas, Virgie Honeycutt of Arkansas, Lurella Pate of Salina, Sue Laurance of Oregon and Lauree Laurance of Oregon; brother, Otho Laurance of Oregon; 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Blaine Honeycutt, Jr., and his brother, Hugh C. Laurance.
