Ellen Marie Vershnik, 94, died Nov. 6, 2012, in Hermiston, Ore.
Ellen was born May 30, 1918, to Augustine and Marie (Troup) Rapella at home in Susquehanna, Pa. She was the 6th of 8 children: Lena, Mary, Catherine, Carl, Samuel and Rosemary. She attended Grade School at St. Johns School, High School at Laurel Hill Academy and St. Josephs School of Nursing in Carbondale, Pa.
She served in the US Navy during WWII as Lt. Registered Nurse. She served aboard the USS Haven, One of the first ships sent to aid survivors of the Atomic bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan.
Ellen married Joseph Vershnik on Aug. 3, 1946, and just celebrated their 66th anniversary.
Ellen leaves behind her husband Joe Even Vershnik of Hermiston; daughter Judy Lazdauskas of Baker City; grandchildren Teresa and husband Karl Adams of Hermiston, Joe and wife Becky Lazdauskas of Idaho Falls; great grandchildren Zac, Sydney, Cody, Jessa and Ellie.
