Don was born Oct. 24, 1925 in Weiser, Idaho to Eldon and Hazel Hughes Walker. He attended Weiser High School, excelling in football and track. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army. While serving in the 9th Infantry he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. When the war ended, he served during the Nuremberg War Trials. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1945. Soon after returning to Weiser, Don married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Miller. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. In 1948 they were blessed with twins, Jack and Judy, and raised their family in Weiser and New Meadows. Throughout his life, Don was involved in the cattle industry in Weiser, New Meadows, and McCall.
Don and Barbara spent most of their summers at their ranch in New Meadows. In later years, the couple enjoyed traveling in their motor home and visiting all their family and their many friends across the west. Don had a great sense of humor and loved life. He was a friend to everyone he met. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were always very special to him. In his last few months, some of his most treasured times were when Barbara and Judy would take him on long drives from Baker City to Sumpter and Halfway.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bob, and his sister Marty.
Don is survived by his wife Barbara; Son and daughter-in-law Jack and Cora, Weiser; daughter and son-in-law Judy and Vic Endioctt, Baker City; his five grandchildren, Conley, Jill, Karla, Jennifer, and Holly; and his six great-grandchildren Emily, Abi, Skylar, Deegan, Chase, and Claire.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff for all of the support and living care given to Don during the last few years.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to benefit Parkinson’s Research to Coles Tribute Center, 1950 Place Street Baker City, OR 97814.
When we count our many blessings,
It isn’t hard to see,
That life’s most valuable treasures,
Are the treasures that are free.
For it isn’t what we own or buy,
That signifies our wealth,
It’s the special gifts that have no price Our family, friends, and health.
