He was shipped to England, spent time in the European Theater until 1946, and then was in the active reserves. After his discharge, he and his brother, Ruel, headed west. He looked up a friend from radio school, Earl Tiller of Burns, who suggested they apply for jobs with the Edward Hines Lumber Company. They were hired, fell in love with Oregon and never left. On Aug. 29, 1947, he married Joy Brisbois at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Canyon City. When the Korean War was declared, he was recalled to active duty. He attended cryptology school in Washington, then he and his wife shipped out to Guam for 24 months, where he was the section leader of his group. Upon their return, the family moved to Lebanon, where they lived for 15 years. He worked for Big Rock Logging Company as the logging superintendent, in charge of road building. In 1968, the family returned to Grant County, where he opened and ran a car dealership for six and a half years. He then was co-manager of the Mountain View Golf Course for three years. The next years were spent on remodeling, and his real love, logging and loading log trucks at the crack of dawn. He retired at age 70, but was never idle. They made several trips to Alaska, where he enjoyed fishing for salmon and halibut. He loved his garden and yard work, took up cooking, and became a gourmet cook. He started each day with the early coffee crew at The Outpost, and enjoyed going to the store, visiting, joking and showing off his sense of humor. He was a charter and life member of the John Day Elks Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Joy; sons, Jon (Debbie) of Salt Lake City and David (Joanne) of Anchorage, Alaska; grandsons, Connor of Anchorage, and Collin and Reilly of Salt Lake City; brother, Ruel (Margaret) of Burns; sister, Mae (Cleob) Scott of Ridgedale, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.
