Howard Charles Gable, 95, died at his Mt. Vernon home on July 30. A celebration of life service will be at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the John Day Elks Lodge.
Mr. Gable was born April 22, 1917, in Laclede, Mo., to Edith Harter Gable and Claude Gable. He had four sisters, Evelyn (Skeet) Gable-Bates of Montrose, Calif., Marilyn Gable-Holloway of Brookfield, Mo., Eunice (Sis) Gable-VanDyke of La Crescenta, Calif., and Velma (Jackie) Gable-Watson of La Crescenta; and a brother, M.F. (Bud) Gable of San Clemente, Calif.

In the 1930s, he moved to Southern California to join his brothers and sisters. Serving with the U.S. Air Force, he was stationed at Kahuku, Hawaii, and in New Mexico during World War II.
He married Wanda Potts Gable in 1953. During the 1950s, he was involved with dairy farming. He moved to Kimberly in 1961, and ran the W-4 cattle and farming ranch. In 1980, he moved to Mt. Vernon, where he lived until his death.
He was involved with the Grant County Sheriff Search and Rescue, county conservation/land management, wildlife habitat, rural fire and the Forest Service. He achieved many awards and accomplishments for horse and cattle farming, soil conservation, the Central Oregon District Fire budget committee, and his pride and joy, preservation of the Plum Grove School in Laclede, Mo. The school was awarded by the Missouri Alliance for Historical Preservation in 1998. He also received awards in ranch real estate in the 1990s.
Survivors include his life friend and partner of 15 years, Donna Guthrie, and family; sisters, Evelyn “Skeet” (Gable) Bates and Marilyn (Gable) Holloway; several nieces and nephews; two great-nieces; and two great-grandchildren.
