She cooked for 27 men on a thrashing crew, and cooked for several crews before she married. On Dec. 22, 1943, she married Miles Willard Gilman. They worked on Wall Creek Ranch, and eventually bought it from his parents. They later sold that ranch and moved to Monument where they bought another ranch and raised dairy cows. She worked at and owned Mountain Inn for many years. After selling the motel, she bought the post office building, and put in a cafe and store that she ran until she retired in 2006. She was a great businesswoman and mentor to others. She liked to garden, cook, sew, knit, quilt and do ceramics. She took great pride in all the shirts and vests she sewed for her husband, and the quilts she made for friends. She loved watching baseball and game shows. She loved all animals, especially her kittens and dog, Sam. She loved to ride horses, and had her last horse until he died at age 33. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Fern Pope of Baker City, niece, Linda Hettinga of Pilot Rock; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard; and her brother, Delmer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Long Creek ambulance through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S.
