Eagle Valley News; Richland, OR; 6 June 1918 DEATH CLAIMS ANOTHER Mrs. Wm. H. Ashby died at her home in New Bridge at about 5:30 Sunday morning, June 2nd, after an illness of several months though bedfast but a very short time. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon, E. E. Holman conducting the services at the cemetery. The large crowd in attendanc ewas evidence of the respect held for the deceased by the citizens of the community. Charlotte Ann Hewitt was born in Trumbull county, Ohio, and was 71 years, 5 months, 5 days, of age at time of death. In 1874 she came to Willamette Valley and on Dec. 27th of same year was married to Wm. H. Ashby. The young couple located in the Grand Ronde Valley in 1876, being among the first settlers of that section; afterwards coming to Pine Valley where they resided 7 or 8 years. They located in Eagle Valley about 16 years ago. Beside the husband, five sons and two daughters survive, viz: Charles, Newton, Frank, George and Bleadon Ashby, Mrs. Fannie Jennings and Mrs. Nellie Holcomb; all of whom were present at the funeral, as where also 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A little daughter was drowned in North Pine Creek about 20 years ago. The deceased was greatly esteemed by all with whom she came in contact for her quiet, loving disposition and devotion to her family. The sympathy of the community is extended to the grief stricken husband and children.
