DIED IN U.S. SERVICE
Joseph P. McCabe was born in Eagle Valley on October 15, 1899, and made his home here until about six years ago. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in the fall of 1917, and while little is known of his experience in the service, it is a matter of record that he was recentlyr ecommended for gallantry and attention to duty and his behavior at the time his ship was torpedoed and sank last September.
It was not known that he was ill until last week when word came that he was in critical condition from the effects of pneumonia at the Navy Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. On Thursday a message came announcing his death, and at the request of his mother the remains were shipped here for burial. They arrived here last evening and the funeral was held at the Eagle Valley cemetery this afternoon. Young men who had been mustered out of service acted as pall bearers. Rev. Johnson made a short but impressive address at the grave, and a goodly number were present at the services.
The deceased is survived by his mother, Mrs. Anna Smith of Richland; his father, Joseph McCabe of Portland; one brother, James McCabe of Portland; also a number of half brothers and sisters who reside in Eagle Valley.
